Acupuncture on animals has been around for 5,000 years.  The first written treatise on it is from Sri Lanka regarding acupuncture on elephants! It is generally a safe and painless form of treatment with fewer side effects than many Western medications. The National Institutes of Health found in their 1999 Consensus Report on Acupuncture that it can enhance the effect or decrease the amount of medication required. They also found that this system of medicine is as well supported by research as Western medicine.

Acupuncture and electroacupuncture (E-Stim) treat the body at the cellular and even intracellular level to stimulate healing and decrease pain and inflammation. Acupuncture can influence the immune system, nerves, and internal organs by releasing chemicals or producing electrical signals. Traditional Chinese Medicine describes this simply as “moving the Qi.”

Very narrow, sterile wires (or needles) are inserted through the skin, stretching the tissues and stimulating the cells to release biochemical mediators to affect oxygen release, endorphin release, and blood flow. Nerve stimulation can send electrical signals that influence pain and inflammation pathways. Acupuncture is generally an additive treatment that requires multiple sessions to achieve the best results.

Conditions that may be treated by acupuncture include:

  • Arthritis

  • Back and neck pain

  • IVDD

  • Hip Dysplasia

  • Degenerative Myelopathy

  • Traumatic nerve injury

  • Hindlimb weakness

  • Post-operative healing

  • Some gastrointestinal disorders

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine uses herbal medications to treat a variety of conditions. The goal is to treat the underlying causes of any condition. Herbal medications contain active ingredients, just like Western medications, but usually are not as concentrated, while retaining the benefits of working synergistically with other active compounds in the herb that Western methods have removed.

If my pet may benefit from acupuncture, and I choose to pursue it, I can add acupuncture to my package discount.
